🛡️ Safety & Stealth Parking
Safety concerns are the #1 reason people leave spots at 2am — and the #1 worry of would-be vanlifers. The reality: with good habits, vanlife is statistically quite safe.
Rule zero: the gut rule. If a spot feels wrong, leave. Every experienced vanlifer has a story of driving away from a bad vibe. It's never wasted fuel.
Choosing a spot: arrive before dark so you can read the area. Look for other overnight vehicles (safety in numbers at truck stops, Cracker Barrels, established boondock areas), lighting, cell signal, and a clear exit path. Check Roadlife's safety ratings on places — real reports from travelers who slept there.
Stealth basics for city sleeping: blackout window covers, no lights at night, arrive late and leave early, don't slide between the cab and back visibly, never open doors after settling in, and rotate spots — never the same street two nights running. Park where overnight parking is quietly tolerated, not where signs forbid it.
Hard security: lock doors (always), keep keys and a charged phone within reach, park nose-out for fast exits, keep the driver's seat clear so you can leave without stepping outside. A carbon monoxide detector is non-negotiable if you run any heater.
People safety: don't broadcast your real-time location publicly, let a trusted person know your general route, and keep valuables out of sight. Solo travelers: share your itinerary privately through Roadlife with someone you trust.
The 2am knock: if law enforcement asks you to move, be polite, move on, and note the area in the forum so others know.
